Dr. Perlmutter receives prestigious Linus Pauling Award from The Institute for Functional Medicine

Fort Lauderdale, FL (May 29, 2002) - Naples, FL-based neurologist David Perlmutter, MD, FACN received the prestigious 2002 Functional Medicine Linus Pauling Award at the Ninth International Symposium on Functional Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The award is the highest honor conferred by The Institute for Functional Medicine, host of the annual symposium. Before a group of more than 500 physicians representing more than 26 countries, Dr. Perlmutter was recognized for his clinical application of emerging scientific research into the fundamental biological dysfunctions that lead to brain disease. This marks the second recent distinction for Dr. Perlmutter, who on May 19, 2002 was awarded the Denham Harmon award for his efforts in expanding the knowledge of the role of free radicals in clinical medicine. The award was presented by the American College for Advancement in Medicine at the ACAM conference in Fort Lauderdale.

The Linus Pauling Functional Medicine Award commemorates the late Dr. Linus Pauling; two-time Nobel laureate, who received honors in chemistry in 1954, and the 1963 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons. Dr. Pauling is the only person ever to win two unshared Nobel Prizes. He may be best remembered today for his groundbreaking research in the development of the concept of molecular disease and the role that vitamin C and other nutrients play in their prevention and treatment. Each year, the Linus Pauling Functional Medicine Award goes to an individual whose research or clinical expertise has contributed substantially to the advancement knowledge in functional medicine. Previous recipients of the award include Sidney Baker, MD, of Yale University, and Gerald Reaven, MD of Stanford, and Leo Galland, MD, of Yale University.

David Jones MD, president of IFM, stated "The Linus Pauling Functional Medicine Award is based on Pauling’s undaunted commitment to the investigation of the basic processes of life. Dr Perlmutter was chosen as this year’s Linus Pauling Award recipient because of his innovative clinical practices, and his devotion to the education of other physician in his field, for serving as a mentor to other clinicians, and for showing the same enduring commitment to excellence as did Dr. Pauling."
